Nevadans have submitted several ideas for the state quarter, suggesting depictions of bighorn sheep, Hoover Dam, mining, mountains, lakes and sagebrush.
"A lot of people want the outline of the state with the phrase 'Silver State or all for our Country.'" said state Treasurer Chief of Staff Kathy Besser. "We have some casino entries, but those are not allowed."
State Treasurer Brian Krolicki's office is open to ideas until Sept. 17.
At least 100 themes have been offered. A state committee will chose three to five from the entries to send to the U.S. Mint at the end of September. The mint will work with a state historian and engrave examples to be sent back to Nevada. The design will voted on by residents at the beginning of next year, Besser said.
"The treasurer really thinks this will truly be something Nevadans can be proud of," Besser said. "People have done a fantastic job."
Krolicki is chairman of the 16-member advisory committee. The rules prohibit using an individual's face or any commercial, educational, religious or other logo or depiction.
States are encouraged to submit themes "that promote the diffusion of knowledge among the youth of the United States about the state, its history and geography, and the rich diversity of our national heritage."
Submitters are invited to write down the theme and its historical significance. A copy of the rules can be found at www.NevadaTreasurer.gov or by calling 684-5706.
