Olympic sports we'll never see

We see the Olympic Committee is looking at new "sports" for the next Olympics in 2008 in Beijing ... korfball (a ball is tossed into a really tall bucket on a pole and played by men and women at the same time ... supposedly very popular in Europe); bridge (wow ... that'll be as exciting as "celebrity poker"); and ballroom dancing (got to admit that you have to be good to do that) ... but are they "sports"?

We don't think so ... maybe skills or arts, but not sports. Then again, how about knitting, hopscotch or jacks? The ancient Greeks are probably rolling over in their graves, yearning for the good old days when eye-gouging, biting and breaking legs was the order of the day ... what is the world coming to? They even let Maizie run in the stadium at Olympia in 1978 (clothed ... otherwise the Greeks would still be giggling) ...

Be careful when you read or listen to political advertising ... and remember that it always makes their candidate look like God. Two cases in point: in "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" ... not one of them, repeat, not one of them, served with John Kerry on a swift boat ... and the "gentleman" who said he was near Kerry when he won his Silver Star and said there was no gunfire in the area, won a medal himself at the same time with the notation "under small-arms fire" ... selective memory, we see.

Also, the ad that says Kerry didn't show up for intelligence meetings is correct ... so check out these guys on both sides of the aisle, and don't just take your friends', families' and the candidates' words for it. ...

Sheer brilliance: Mike Hautekeet, of Mike's Pharmacy, rescued his dirty clothes from the Waterfall fire ... "Why," you ask? He told a friend, "Those are the clothes I wear, not the ones in my closet." Now, there's a thinking man ...

And speaking of the fire ... more thank yous to the Sierra Pacific Power crews for getting the power back on ASAP ... they did a Trojan job for the people affected by the fire. ...

We hit the new India Curry restaurant last week and did the $6.95 "all-you-can-eat" buffet. Certainly different "tastes," but good food. Just make sure to ask if it's "spicy," or you may roast your tongue ... actually, only a couple of things did that ... but they tasted good anyway. ...

We are lucky in Carson City to have so many great places to eat ... (but, we still want a Greek and German place, too ...)

Let's hope that Granite Construction will spray down Stewart Street as they work on it ... the dust last week was dreadful.

Former "Miss Carson City," Tracie Moore, is leading the charge to have a Miss Carson City Pageant next year after an absence of seven years ... she is looking for sponsors and interested young ladies to participate in the Miss America scholarship pageant for 2005 at the Brewery Arts Center (they've donated the site).

Please contact her (misscarsoncity@hotmail.com) and support the effort to have a Miss Carson City represent us next year ... our city deserves no less. Now, if they'd just waive the age, talent, looks and bathing suit competition ... we'd enter ... (stop laughing)

Someone has suggested to us, that we urge the firefighters to put out a calendar with their pictures on it ... now, there's a "hot" idea. ...

Michael Powers, "Seattle jazz great," will be at Comma Coffee Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ... $10 in advance, or $15 day of show ... come hear the jazz with your friends ... and enjoy the evening.

There is a bill in the House of Representatives, H.R. 3123, that would permit immigrants to take their citizenship tests in a foreign language or exempt them entirely ... c'mon, folks ... pretty soon, English will be a foreign language here ... we think it's a rotten idea ... so call Congressman Jim Gibbons' office at 686-5760, and ask him to help defeat it ... danke schoen, merci and muchos gracias. ...

And thanks to DeeAnn Parsons for a couple of thoughts ... "When your mom is mad at your dad, don't let her brush your hair," and "You can't trust dogs to watch your food (or us, for that matter)."

And to Father Jerry ... it's all Carolyn's fault (no matter what she says). ...
