Dayton boys fall against Lowry

For most Northern 3A basketball teams, going to Winnemucca to play Lowry is like visiting the Bermuda Triangle because something mysterious can always happen.

It took less than 30 seconds for the unexplained to happen for Dayton in its 56-50 loss at Lowry on Friday. The Dust Devils had a 50-49 lead and the ball with less than 30 seconds left only to see Lowry end the game with a 7-0 run.

"It's just one of those mysterious things when you play up at Winnemucca and you lead with less than 30 seconds and you end up losing by six," Dayton coach Rob Streeter said. "Our kids just played great.

"They battled their butts off and played well enough to win. It's just one of those things. It's a tough place to play."

Lowry gained the upper hand in a wide open race for third in the Northern 3A. Dayton is 7-6 while Lowry is tied in the loss column at 6-6 and the Buckaroos have swept the season series.

Dayton was clinging to a 50-49 lead when it turned the ball over. Lowry responded with a three-pointer and after another Dust Devil turnover was able to put the game away.

Lowry led 29-18 at halftime, but Dayton outscored the Buckaroos 15-6 in the third quarter to close to within 35-33.
