Curry Street improvement plan near completion

A plan is nearly finished that would bring sidewalks and street improvements to Curry Street, a collector roadway that runs parallel to Carson Street.

Using funding from gas taxes, the city is paying an independent engineer to create the plan to eventually create a street that meets urban standards. The plan calls for widening Curry to add a center turn lane and adding a bicycle lane, curbs, gutters and sidewalks.

"We're looking at potential participation with economic development in that region," said City Transportation Manager John Flansberg. "As people develop along that corridor, we want to know what it's going to look like."

With the recent development of Casino Fandango at the old Supply One store, the city was asked whether the casino could lower the elevation of the street. The request wasn't accommodated because of drainage problems, but it prompted the city to look at developing the master plan for the street, Flansberg said.

Once the plan is in place, the city will be able to work with developers who build along the street and request improvements piece by piece to fit the larger plan.

The city is budgeting $25,000 for the plan, Flansberg said.

At least 1,500 cars use Curry Street every day.
