Carson City transportation officials will be asked Wednesday whether they like the idea of combining a series of streets that loop around the east side of the city from College Parkway to Fairview into one main avenue.

Since introducing the idea to the Planning Commission in November, city staff has taken calls from several residents interested in seeing the streets combined, said Scott Royal, geographic information systems coordinator.

One caller suggested turning the boulevard into Plank Parkway, Royal said. Another idea was to call it North Capital and South Capital Boulevard.

"There's no definitive answer for that," Royal said. "This is still definitely in the planning process to see how everybody feels about it."

The streets included in the plan are East College Parkway, East Graves Lane, Graves Lane, North Edmonds Drive, South Edmonds Drive and Fairview Drive. It would provide drivers with a "loop" road around east Carson, as an alternative to using the future freeway bypass.

"It's just a part of the development of Carson City, but it sure helps to have a common name with the freeway," Royal said. "It would be a good way to give directions."

More than 30 business and landowners who were asked about the proposal were 90 percent in favor of consolidating the streets.

"They liked the idea because it removes the confusion when giving directions to their locations, and they see the benefit when it comes to advertising," Royal said.

Carson City Regional Transportation Commission members can provide comments to city staff on the proposal Wednesday.
