Cardinals knock off Whittell

The Carson Cardinals Baseball team warmed up for its upcoming Doc Stewart's Tournament in Roseburg, Ore. with a 21-5 win over Whittell on Tuesday at Ron McNutt Field.


Carson needed just three hits to jump out to a 9-0 lead in the first inning. Kevin Schlange, Jeremy Etchemendy, Mike Handley and Murph Gardner all walked to force in a run and Etchemendy scored on a wild pitch.


Tony Fagan's RBI single made it 3-0 and Nick Smallman and Jack Jacquet walked to force in a run. Alex Tanchek and Sean Costella each followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.


After Fagan scored on a wild pitch, another run scored on two errors. Etchemendy singled and Handley's RBI single made it 9-0.


In the second, Fagan tripled, Jacquet and Schlange each had RBI singles and Etchemendy belted a two-run double during a five-run rally that made it 14-2.


In the third, Carson made it 17-5. Fagan and Jacquet each had singles and Tanchek had an RBI single during the rally. Etchemendy doubled and scored to make it 18-5 in the fourth.


Schlange's two-run double made it 20-5 in the fifth and Gardner and Jason Knowles each singled as Carson took a 21-5 lead in the sixth.


Starting pitcher Kyle Mandoki pitched three innings for the win. Josh Caron pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four. Caron struck out the side in the fifth.


Mike Teixeira pitched a 1-2-3 sixth and Handley pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out two. Fagan had three hits and Etchemendy, Jacquet and Schlange all had two hits for Carson, which begins play in the Doc Stewart's Tournament on Thursday.
