Dayton baseball sweeps Lowry

The Dayton High baseball team has a goal of being one of the three Northern 3A clubs to be in the NIAA State Championships this year. Beating a team for the first time ever is a good start.

Dayton not only beat Lowry for the first time, but swept the Buckaroos decisively, winning the opener 9-4 and taking the nightcap 9-2 in its Northern 3A opening games on Saturday.

"That's the first time that we've ever beaten Lowry in baseball and we swept them," Dayton coach Craig Miller said. "That is the important thing, getting off to the good start for the season."

Adam Diament pitched a complete game in the opener and freshman Travis Wood pitched a complete game in the nightcap. Diament pitched a six-hitter, allowing three earned runs and striking out five.

Dayton broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth innings, scoring four runs to take a 9-3 lead. Matt Bowman and Tim Torres had hits and Danny Hopper had an RBI single to spark the the rally. Hopper with 3-for-3 with five RBI as he also had a two-run home run and a 2-run double. Torres and Diament each went 2-for-3.

In the nightcap, Wood pitched a four-hitter. Bowman was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Hopper went 2-for-4, Wood had a hit and two RBI, Andrew Rice and Torres each had a hit and an RBI and Andy Salazar added a hit for Dayton.

The Dust Devils broke the game open again in the sixth when they scored four runs to take a 9-1 lead.
