Carson City redevelopment officials are putting the finishing touches on their first downtown information kiosk.

The four-sided structure, capped by a silver dome, is at the southwest corner of Carson and Telegraph streets.

Economic Development and Redevelopment Manager Joe McCarthy said it was designed by Martha O'Neill of Gardnerville to reflect the theme of the Capitol. McCarthy said it is the first of a number of kiosks that will be erected around the downtown area to help guide tourists and let people know what's going on in Carson City.

O'Neill earned a $500 prize for winning the design contest that began in March 2001.

Including design and initial construction, McCarthy said the first kiosk cost $25,000. The money comes from the city's redevelopment authority, which is funded by property taxes on downtown businesses.

"After that, construction costs will be significantly less because we've got the mold in place," he said.

He said ideally each kiosk will list surrounding businesses, provide a calendar of events in Carson City, offer space for posters announcing individual events and outline the Ghost Walk and other historic tours through the downtown.

"It's not the intent to let people advertise their garage sale," he said. "It will advertise local businesses and events and give people walking around downtown Carson the ability to see all the sights."
