Carson golf settles for third

The Carson High golf team had mixed results, but still managed to finish third in the last regular season Northern 4A golf tournament.

Carson finished with a score of 412, playing on the difficult Lake Tahoe course in windy conditions. The Senators were edged for second by Reno High, which finished with a 411. Galena won the event with a 401 while Fallon was close behind the Senators in fourth with a 414.

Three of Carson's golfers had solid rounds while the other three Senator golfers struggled somewhat. Bryon Upton fired a 4-over-par 76 to take third and J.T. Cockerill also placed in the top 10 with a 79 while Scott Jenkins shot an 81.

Tim Hohl, though, who has consistently been Carson's lowest scorer, finished with an 85 while Jeremy Nielsen and Chad Gilmore each had an 89. Hohl shot an even-par 36 on the front nine, but struggled to a 49 on the back nine.

The Lake Tahoe course features water on 15 holes. "There's a lot of hidden water," Carson coach Rod Butler said. "You can't see it from the tees. They had some trouble with that. Bryon, J.T. and Scott worked hard the whole day."

Carson was coming off a tournament in which it won, giving Galena its first loss in a Northern 4A event in two years.

"We had a good chance of beating Galena again and I thought they let it get away," Butler said.

The Senators will next play in the Northern 4A Championships in which the top two teams will advance to the NIAA State Championships. The Northern 4A event will be held Monday and Tuesday at Wolf Run Golf Club. Butler said it's likely that his team will have to break 400 on each day of the event to qualify for state.
