Senators qualify on the track

SPARKS - Carson High's boys continued their strong effort on the second day of the Northern 4A qualifying track and field meet Saturday at Reed High School.

Carson qualified 10 boys in individual events and three relay squads for next week's Northern 4A Championships next Saturday at Reed.

Meanwhile, the Galena boys produced 14 individual qualifiers and three relay squads.

The top three finishers at the regional meet will qualify for the NIAA 4A State Championships.

"I was pleased that we got everybody through that we thought we would get through," Carson coach Todd Ackerman. "Matt Moore's time in the 300-meter hurdles (39.56) was his PR (personal record), and it's where we think he should be running. Our relay squads ran well. We have to make a couple of adjustments. We're going to be in the hunt to qualify."

Ackerman was especially pleased with Josh Heilman, who qualified in the 100 and 200-meter races. He clocked a PR of 11.37 in the 100 good for second behind Hug's Isaac Porter, and had a fifth-place effort of 23.73 in the 200.

Tilor Smith qualified first in the long jump (21-8 1/2) and third in the triple jump (43-7 1/2). Jeremy Gray qualified fifth in the long jump (20-5). Jon Christensen (11-6) qualified second in the pole vault, while Blake Easby (11-0) and Brian Elder (11-0) both tied for eighth place.

Stephen Waicul (46-10), Nick Rebholz (46-7 1/4) and Rob Ghiglieri (45-11 1/2) qualified seventh through ninth in the shot put.

Carson was fifth in the 400 relay (44.65), fifth in the 800 (1:32.05) and second in the 1600 (3:27.58).

Stephen Pottey led the charge for the Grizzlies, qualifying first in the 800 (1:59.40), second in the 1600 (4:30.90) and fourth in the 3200 (9:43.99).

Hunter Mulhall, Daniel Geib and Roman Burns qualified in two events apiece. Mulhall was second in the long jump (20-11) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (40.69). Geib placed fifth in the 3200 (9:46.61) and sixth in the 1600 (4:40.99). Burns tied teammate Justin Houk for first in the triple jump (44-1 1/4), and he also was eight in the 100 (11.67).

Max Lahoud-Watson was fourth in the long jump (20-6 3/4), Tobi Haswell third in the 300 hurdles (41.25).

The Grizzlies were fourth in the 400 relay (44.93), fourth in the 800 (1:32.24) and fourth in the 1600 (3:27.98).

Douglas' Dan Sipko just missed qualifying as he took ninth in the 800 (2:05.19), Iani Dunbar was fourth in the 400 (52.47), Alex Hall tied for second in the pole vault (11-6) and Garrett Hostettler was fourth in the shot (47-10). The 400 relay squad was seventh in 45.64.

On the girls' side, Galena qualified 12 individuals and all three relay squads for next week's finals. Carson will send five individuals and three relay squads and Douglas will send one individual and one relay squad.

Lydia Mailander tied for first in the high jump (4-8), qualified fourth in the triple jump (35-8 1/2), fifth in the long jump (16-8 1/2) and fifth in the 100 hurdles (16.65). Julia Mailander tied her sister in the high jump (4-8) and qualified sixth in the long jump (16-8).

Sarah Goodenow tied for first in the high jump (4-8) and Mandy Dickman tied for first in the pole vault (8-0). Ali Agee qualified second in the 400 (58.66) and Hannah Balkenbush qualified third in the 400 (58.88). Alyssa Abbott qualified third in the 800 (2:19.40) and seventh in the 1600 (5:24.0).

Carson's Shaylyn Tom qualified first in the shot (38-2) and was second in the discus (113-11). Amanda Benson qualified fifth in the 400 (61.99) and Ashley Terry tied for first in the high jump (4-8). Alex McAlman qualified fifth in the discus (104-7).

Douglas' Harmony Bennington was sixth in the 300 hurdles (50.18).
