Locals qualify for state in 3A track

Bridgette Galles and the Dust Devils' 3,200-meter relay won titles to highlight Dayton's effort at the Northern 3A track meet on Friday at Yerington.

Fernley's Corey Ryan also was an individual winner as many athletes from Dayton, Yerington and the Vaqueros advanced to next weekend's state championships at Reed. The top five finishers advanced to the state meet. The zone meet concludes today at Yerington.

Galles won the 300 hurdles in an outstanding time of 49.16 seconds while the team of Billy Mountjoy, Stephen Novello, Joey Mountjoy and Randy Contreras won the 3,200 relay in 8:23.36. Ryan won the 400 in 51.30.

Other local athletes to qualify for state were: Boys 400 - Billy Mountjoy, second, 51.84. Boys 1,600 - Josh Whitman, Fernley, 4:43.76; Novello, fourth, 4:47.01; Lane Mortensen, Dayton, fifth, 4:47.59. 800 relay - Ryan Clifford, Ollie Gruse, Shawn Lee, Dan Regalado, Fernley, third, 1:34.93. Boys 3,200 relay - Ryan, Whitman, Lee, Tony Yori, Fernley, third, 8:27.95. Boys 200 - Regalado, fifth, 23.29. Boys long jump - Cody Parrott, Yerington, 19 feet, 0- 3/4 inches. Boys discus - Mark Lemos, Yerington, second, 139-08.

Girls 300 hurdles - Lacie Whitlock, Yerington, third, 50.49. Girls 400 relay - Sabrina Cantrell, Shaelynn, Kristel Thompson, Melissa Kargas, Dayton, third, 54.35. Girls pole vault - Debbie Quieroz, Yerington, Thompson, Dayton, fifth, 8-0. Girls triple jump - Abigail Lupena, Dayton, third, 31-6 3/4. Girls shot put - Brittany Puzey, Yerington, third, 34-1 3/4.
