The pitch shot

The pitch shot is a shot played from close to the green when a high shot is required. This shot should stop within 10 or 15 feet of where it lands.

A common scenario for this shot is when there is a bunker between the ball and the hole. The first step is to determine where you should land the ball. If you only worry about getting over the bunker your thoughts are consumed with failure and the ball will almost certainly end up in it. Pick your target and the club to achieve the desired result; the pitch shot is usually played with your most lofted club.

Position feet closer together than normal

Open stance (line across toes slightly left of target)

Place ball about center of stance

Aim club at target or a little open (slightly to right)

More weight on left foot

Swing back and forward equal distance

Don't lift the ball, let the loft on the club get the ball up

To promote the desired descending blow practice swinging and see that the hands reach the ball before the club head.

Be aware of how the ball is sitting. If the ball is down or on a bare lie move the ball a little farther back in the stance to promote ball first contact.
