LAS VEGAS - A 19-year-old Marine from Las Vegas has been killed in Iraq while conducting combat operations, the Defense Department announced Sunday.

Lance Cpl. Nicholas H. Anderson died Friday in a vehicle incident in Iraq's al-Anbar province, the military said.

Anderson was assigned to 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, and based in Camp Pendleton, Calif.

He was the seventh soldier with ties to Nevada killed in Iraq or Kuwait since Operation Iraqi Freedom began in 2003.

Camp Pendleton Marines are among the thousands of U.S. and Iraqi troops fighting to secure the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, which is in al-Anbar.
