Among the key goals set by first-year Carson High volleyball coach Shana Wilkins for this season was improvement. Judging from their performance on Thursday night against Hug, the Senators are right on schedule.
The Senators defeated Hug in straight sets 25-14, 25-9, 25-11 to improve their Sierra League record to 5-2 in a match played at Morse Burley Gymnasium. This also enabled them to begin the second round of their league schedule on an impressive note.
The performance was a marked improvement from the league opener on Sept. 14, when the Senators defeated Hug in Reno 25-13, 25-17, 25-15.
"We're real young and we're trying to improve with each match, and looking out there tonight, we improved drastically from the last time we played Hug, Wilkins said.
"If we can keep on improving, hopefully we can come back here in the second half of the season and pick off Douglas and South Tahoe," she added, referring to the two league opponents Carson has already lost to.
Nicole Scott led the Senators at the net, as the 6-foot-2 junior middle blocker put down 11 kills. Sydney Parker contributed seven kills and Sandra McAlman six.
Setter Lindsay Ford triggered Carson's attack with 30 assists. Ford and Lindsey Kern were credited with six service aces each.
The Senators resume league play next Wednesday at home against North Valleys.
JUNIOR VARSITY
Carson swept past Hug 25-13, 25-18 behind five aces each from Julia Lopez and Courtey Katafias, four from Jessica Quevedo, three by Whitney Hoot, and two each by Candice Rutledge and Rebecca Pankey.
Hoote also contributed five kills and Alyssa Owens three.
