The Carson High junior varsity cross country teams made excellent showings at the Northern 4A Championships on Friday at Spanish Springs. Carson's girls won the title while the Senator boys took second.
At the halfway mark in the girls race, Carson's girls were second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth and they finished in that same order. Meagan Myer, Sumantha Pitts and Tiffany Halen all had excellent races The race of the day was turned in by Halen, who after being sidelined with injuries all of last year had her best showing of the season when it really counted.
Carson finished with 15 points as the first place finisher in the race ran as in individual. Galena was second with 42 points and Douglas was third with 66 points.
Myer finished in 24 minutes, 20 seconds, Pitts finished in 24:20, Kristin Neddenriep was fourth in 24:30, Andrea Kierstead was fifth in 25:19 and Halen was sixth in 25:28.
The boys had their work cut out for them with Reno and Galena who are always tough. CHS came within six points from winning the championship. Reno won with 48 points, Carson was second (54) and Galena was third (63).
Scott Wandel really uncorked an excellent performance. "After the first hill I knew I was going to recover fast so I just kept going for it," Wandel said.
Wandel, Tyler Davies and Chris Kuhn all ran excellent races as the whole CHS team was tightly packed. Wandel was fourth in 20:12, Tyler Davies was 11th in 21:28, Kuhn was 12th in 21:33, Tyler Bourns was 13th in 21:37, Ahron Osheroff was 14th in 21:39, Stephen Maples was 17th in 21:55, Greg Saunders was 18th in 22:04 and Mike Gallager was 44th in 25:16.
The varsity Northern 4A Championships will be held on Thursday at Reno's Rancho San Rafael Park.
