Medical identification bracelets are being handed out at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center.

The bracelets contain valuable medical information which could save time and lives in an emergency. The senior center, in conjunction with TRIAD and the Carson City Sheriff's Department, will begin distributing bracelets at 10:15 a.m. today.

"We are the place to get them," said Janice McIntosh, director of the senior center. "Once they have it, they'll have to take it to Ponderosa Stamp and Engraving for engraving of information."

Each person receiving a bracelet will need to complete a CC Cares Plus form if he or she is not already a member. CC Cares Plus is a free, confidential service.

The bracelets are available for a one-time suggested donation of $10. However, no one in need will be turned away as long as bracelets are available. All donations will be used to buy other bracelets and perpetuate the program.

To be eligible for an ID bracelet, a person's medical history must be entered in a medical information database at the Carson City 911 Dispatch Center. The information can alert paramedics to a person's particular medical needs prior to their arrival.

"The program's goal is to assist the police and emergency medical staff to quickly identify a person who may become incapacitated or confused due to a medical or other condition requiring emergency attention," McIntosh said.

The service is available for all people who work or live in the Carson City area, especially seniors and the disabled.

The recipient must update the medical information yearly. The Carson City Fire Department will send a reminder by mail at the end of the membership year.

The program is offered through TRIAD, an organization of law enforcement agencies and senior-related organizations that work together to reduce the criminal victimization of the elderly and assist people with related issues.
