Douglas soccer 'Mellows' out

Colten Mellows led the defensive effort and also scored on an outstanding individual effort as the Douglas High boys soccer team stayed unbeaten with a 3-1 win over Galena on Wednesday.


Justin Grimm scored the Tigers' other two goals. Mellows opened the scoring in the first two minutes of the game when he took the ball from sweeper and went through the middle of the field for 50 yards before beating Galena goalie Daniel Timko for the goal.


Grimm took a crossing pass from Justin Norvell 10 minutes later and scored to give Douglas a 2-0 lead. Galena cut the halftime lead to 2-1 when Brett Wilson scored off of an assist from Ricky Martinez. Grimm beat a defender and Timko for a loose ball to score to make it 3-1.


Goalies Steve Done and Chris Aguilar combined for nine saves for Douglas and Timko had nine saves for Galena.


DAYTON BOYS 7, WHITTELL 1


Eddie Lanuca went wild for the Dayton High boys soccer team, scoring six goals in a 7-1 win over Whittell on Wednesday.


Luis Melgarejo scored the other goal for Dayton. The Dust Devil defense also played well, led by Victor Melgarejo, Jose Garcia, Uriel Avila and Juan Alcantra. Goalie Luis Gomez made two saves for Dayton.


WHITTELL 2, DAYTON GIRLS 1


Sabrina Cantrell scored on a breakaway off of an assist from Jessica Riley 16 minutes into the first half to give the Dayton girls soccer team a 1-0 lead before Whittell came back. At goal, Stephanie Shoup made 10 saves and Sarah Langley added four saves for the Dust Devils.


DOUGLAS JV BOYS 4, GALENA 0


Michael Ferranti scored two goals and Leonardo Bravo and Jose Alcaraz each added a goal for the Douglas junior varsity boys soccer team in its win. Josh Vega had two assists and Kyle Mannschreck and Bill Sunderland each added an assist. Alcaraz and Cody Hines combined for 10 saves at goalie to post the shutout.
