Cougar baseball team wins tournament

The Carson Valley Cougars 14 and under traveling baseball team won the Hit it in the Bay baseball tournament held last weekend in Martinez, Calif.


"It was nice to get our first win of the season," Cougar manager Jon Fencl said. "After finishing second once and third twice in our previous three tournament it felt good to get that first tournament victory of the year."


Leading hitters for the tournament were: Matt Rutledge .500, Tyler May .466, Raymond Daniels .461, Lucas Gomez .411, Cody Stevens .375, Pat Riggs .363, Kyle Fencl .307, Kyle Stone .300 and Zach McFadden.


In the semifinals against Marin County, Cody Stevens pitched six strong innings and Rutledge homered to secure a 4-3 win. May pitched a complete game five-hit shutout with 9 strikeouts in a 5-0 win over Martinez in the championship game. For the tournament the Cougars posted a 4-0-1 record as it also defeated Alameda, Calif., and Clayton Valley, Calif.


The Cougars, are made up of players from Douglas, Carson City and Reno and play in two age groups: 13 under and 14 under. For more information on the Cougars visit www.cvcougars.com.
