John H. 'Jack' Stratton

A memorial service for John H. "Jack" Stratton, 83, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 505 College Parkway.

Mr. Stratton died Aug. 9, 2005, of kidney failure and heart disease. He was born Dec. 28, 1921, in Elko.

Mr. Stratton was the office manager for the Nevada State Gaming Control Board and was subsequently appointed as a member of the board by Gov. Paul Laxalt and continued to serve under three board chairmen and four governors (Laxalt, Sawyer, List and O'Callaghan) until his retirement in 1982.

He enjoyed golfing, hunting, bowling and his dogs. He was an avid fisherman.

He served in the U.S. Navy Amphibious Medical Corps Battalion Companies A, B, C and Headquarters Company attached to the U.S. Marine Corps serving as a shore surgical unit in World War II Pacific invasions of Saipan-Tinian, Iowa Jima and the occupation of Japan in 1942-45.

He was preceded in death by sisters LuElla Seitzler, Genevieve Silveria and Carol Parsons; first wife Maxine and son, John.

Among his survivors are his wife of 13 years, Donna, of Carson City; granddaughter Elizabeth Hutches (Trampas) of Sidney, Neb.; brother, E. James of Minden; sister Donna Erickson of Reno; great-grandchildren Traeli and Jaxson Hutches; step-children Regg Palm, Jana Palm and LaVee Hummel and step-grandchildren Austin and Chelsea Hummel and many nieces and nephews.
