Local swimmers shine in U.S. Masters

Two swimmers representing the Greater Carson area made their mark at the U.S. Masters Long Course National Swimming Championships, which concluded on Monday in Mission Viejo, Calif.

Harry Goldsmith, 76, of Glenbrook and Pierre Hathaway, 75, of Carson City represented the Carson valley Manatees at the meet. The two train at the Carson Aquatic Center. Both swam in the 75-79 age group.

There were 110 swimmers representing more than 150 teams at the event. The oldest male swimmer was 90 and the oldest woman was 96.

Goldsmith, swimming in his first national meet after beginning competitive swimming for the first time in 40 years last year, took seventh in the 50-meter freestyle in 41.22 seconds and seventh in the 100 free in 1:41.33.

Hathaway, swimming backstroke, came home with seconds in both the 100 meter and 200 meter events (1:42.60 and 3:49.64) and fifth in the 50 meter back in 45.70.

They both swam faster than their seed times in all of their events, showing the advantage of high altitude training.

be pointed out that in the 100 and 200 back the winner was Horace Knowlton, 76, of Utah, was the winner in the 100 and 200 backstrokes and was No. 1 in the World last year in the 50, 100 and 200 backstrokes in long course and short course. He won the 100 back in 1:32.46 and the 200 back in 3:28.27.

The Sierra Nevada Masters in Reno, coached by Steve Lintz, were represented by Jennifer McCoy, Celeste Miller and Susan Tyler.
