Carson City

Free courses to help with testing for GED

The opportunity for people to study for and test for a high school equivalency diploma test, or GED, will be provided for free by Friends in Service Helping and Western Nevada Community College.

Those interested need to go to the FISH Education Center at 160 E. Long St. and enroll with a WNCC representative. Tests will be given to know what courses each individual needs to study and which courses can already be passed.

Students receive individualized instructions on their own schedule, in the FISH Education Center, these are also free. When the student and their instructor feel the courses have been mastered, the student goes to WNCC to take the GED test.

Crafters sought for upcoming events

The 46th annual Virginia City International Camel Races are coming Sept. 9, 10, and 11, and the ninth annual Salsa Y Salsas! Festival will be held Sept. 17 in Carson City at the Legislative Plaza. Organizers for both events are looking for crafter participation.

Dayton

Dance project classes begin soon

Dancers can pirouette with the Sugar Plum Fairy and waltz with the Snow Flakes in "The Nutcracker" ballet at historic Piper's Opera House Virginia City with the Central Lyon Parks and Recreation Dance Project.

Classes in classical ballet (Russian technique), Broadway jazz, lyrical dance and kinderdance begin Sept. 7 at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St. in Old Town Dayton.

Sessions are Mondays and Wednesdays after school hours for boys and girls ages 5 through adults, beginners to advanced. Tuition is $44 per month for eight or nine classes. Family rate is half tuition for each member of the same family. There are no other fees. Special technique is offered for interested boys.

Dancers are welcome to perform in "The Nutcracker" with the Ballet Society at Piper's Opera House in early December. All classes are taught by professional ballerina Carolyn Oliver.

Virginia City

Learn archiving at school workshop

The Historic Fourth Ward School, 537 South C Street, Virginia City will present an archival workshop from 10-11:30 a.m. Sept. 12 at the school.

There will be hands-on exploration of the Fourth Ward School collection. Under the direction of archivist Cindy Southerland, learn how to inventory, accession, organize, label, number, and conserve artifacts, documents, photographs, maps and books.

Bowers Mansion has weekend tours

Historic Bowers Mansion begins its fall tour schedule after the Labor Day weekend and mansion tours are available on weekends Sept. 10-Oct. 30. Tours are offered every half-hour between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., starting from the Visitors Center behind the mansion.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and children under 17 are $3.

The restored mansion offers a rare glimpse into Nevada life during the 1860s. The mansion was built in 1864 by Comstock millionaires L.S. "Sandy" Bowers and his wife Allison Oram. Their stories, and the history of the mansion, reflect the rags-to-riches-to-rags tales so commonly associated with Nevada's first silver boom.
