WAC honors Utah State's Carroll

Jaycee Carroll, Utah State's outstanding shooting guard, was named Xbox Live Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

Carroll averaged 23.5, leading the Aggies to wins over Middle Tennessee and Weber State. Against Middle Tennessee, he scored 17 points, grabbed three rebounds and had two steals. Against Weber State, he scored a career-high 30 points in a victory. Carroll, who was 10-for-15 from the floor against Weber State, shot 59 percent for the week, including 47 percent from 3-point range.

San Jose State's Lamisha Augustine won the honor for the WAC women after scoring a career-high 35 points in a 78-66 nonconference win over Colorado State. She hit all five of her 3-point attempts and also pulled down 11 rebounds to attain her third double-double of the season.

She is the first Spartan in more than a year to surpass 30 points a game. Both her overall field goal shooting and 3-point shooting were better than 50 percent.

NEVADA WOMEN STRUGGLING

To say the Nevada women are struggling is a huge understatement.

Nevada is 1-7 and points have been very hard to come by entering Saturday's home game against Sacramento State.

In five of those games, the Pack have scored less than 55 points, and three times they've scored less than 50. The Wolf Pack women lost 53-49 to Cal-State Fullerton and lost 55-41 to arch-rival UNLV.

Nevada is shooting 38 percent from the floor, including 19 percent from 3-point range. They are also struggling to hang onto the ball, as their 24 turnovers per game would indicate.

Not one player is averaging double figures in points with Brandi Fitzgerald the leader at 9.9 per game, followed by point guard Traci Graham at 8.5.

RARE ROAD WINS

Very seldom does the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team leave the island to play a game until the conference season starts.

The Rainbow Wahine ventured to the Bay Area on Dec. 8 and 10, and came away with wins over USF (71-63) and Santa Clara (73-69).

Hawai'i, in a rare scheduling format, is playing back-to-back home games against Campbell (Dec. 16 and 17) and Kent State (Dec. 28 and 30) before traveling to Nevada to open the Western Athletic Conference season on Jan. 5 at 7 p.m.

UPSET FOR 'DOGS

The Louisiana Tech men's basketball team gave the WAC some notoriety when it knocked off Bobby Knight's Texas Tech Red Raiders 68-53 last week in Lubbock, where the Red Raiders had won 34 of their last 35 nonconference games.

Paul Millsap scored 29 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Michael Wilde grabbed 10 rebounds and scored eight points.

It was the school's 1,100th men's basketball victory.

The WAC is streaming live video of several men's and women's games this month, including Nevada's men's game against Georgia (Dec. 21), Norfolk State (Dec. 27) and Louisiana-Lafayette (Dec. 29).

The women's games against Sacramento State (Dec. 17) and USF (Dec. 31) also will be shown.
