Carson City Toyota Scion owner Dick Campagni said he has a heart for underprivileged and needy children, which recently earned him a prestigious award for community service and industry accomplishments.

Campagni was one of 65 out of 19,500 national car dealers awarded Time magazine's Quality Dealer Award. He said Tuesday that this award is significant because it's based on the vote of other Nevada car dealers.

"It's based on not only how you run the dealership, but also is based on what you give back to the community," he said. "My wife, Mary, and I, we've always felt it's important to give back. God has been good to us and we love to give back."

Campagni, 61, and other award winners were honored at the opening business meeting of this year's National Automobile Dealers Association convention in New Orleans.

Award recipients are among the nation's most successful auto dealers, according to Time public affairs. The award is sponsored by Time in association with Goodyear and in cooperation with the National Automobile Dealers Association.

Campagni attends and financially supports both St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community and Silver Hills Community Church. He said that he also gives $10,000-$15,000 annually to the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada.

He has also purchased wells in Sudan for malnourished children and financed efforts to free Sudanese slaves.

"I guess there is a place in my heart for kids, especially underprivileged and needy kids," Campagni said.

His dealership has received many honors, including:

• Four-time winner of the Carson City Business of the Year Award.

• The Toyota President's Award for 16 out of 18 years for the highest award based on customer satisfaction.

• Recognition from the Better Business Bureau for five years of complaint-free business.
