Carson City students will begin summer vacation a day late to make up for the snow day the district mandated Jan. 11.

School on June 10 will be scheduled for a minimum day.

"We'll go until noon so we'll fulfill the state requirements for a school day, but they'll get out about two hours early," district superintendent Mary Pierczynski said.

"The first thing is that students will be attending school on June 10, and our middle schools will be doing their promotion ceremony scheduled for Thursday, June 9, on Friday, June 10. It's the same time, same place, but a different day."

Pierczynski will brief the Carson City School Board on the change Tuesday.

The board is scheduled to meet early, at 6:15 p.m., instead of 7 p.m., to accommodate the schedule of Steve Kessler, who will present information on interest-based employee bargaining.

Kessler "from the Commission of Federal Mediation is from San Francisco," said Pierczynski. "He has to be in San Francisco the next day."

"(Interest-based bargaining) is a little different approach from traditional labor negotiations," she said. "I think it's important for the board to understand the concept."

Kessler will lead negotiations at the first bargaining meeting on the weekend of Feb. 11.

"I really think the process is slower than the traditional bargaining process," Pierczynski said. "But when you get down to the money items, it really depends what happens in the Legislature anyway. It's always that way."
