Students make honor rolls

Melissa Elizabeth Rosen of Carson City was recently named to Washington State University's President's honor roll for spring semester. To be eligible for the honor roll, students must earn a 3.75 grade-point average for the semester or have maintained a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

The following local students have been named to the Oregon State University scholastic honor roll for spring term: from Carson City, Vanessa A. Fugate, a junior majoring in anthropology and Jessie A. Hong, a senior majoring in industrial engineering; from Yerington, Rebecca S. Romano, post baccalaureate, health promotion and education.

Yearbook photos being taken for next year

Carson High School seniors will be notified by mail from Ross photo for a date and time for their senior photo this summer.

Photo shoots are scheduled from July 19-23 and Aug. 2, 3, and 4 in room 136 of Carson High School.

For a senior photo to appear in the yearbook, it must be taken during these times and by Ross Photo.

Register soon for fall ACT and SAT

Those planning on attending college should register for fall ACT/SATs as soon as possible.

The Sept. 24 ACT registration date is by Aug. 19. The Oct. 22 ACT registration date is by Set. 16. The Oct. 8 SAT registration date is by Sept. 7 and the Nov. 5 SAT registration date is by Sept. 30. The PSAT is scheduled for Oct. 15.

Also, this year, Carson High seniors should look for the scholarship newsletter called "The Guiding Light." It will be issued in September and includes information on scholarships and college visits scheduled at Carson High School.

Summer math homework for some CHS students

Carson High School students taking advanced trig/pre-calculus, advanced algebra II, advanced geometry or AP calculus have summer math homework.

The assignments should have been received in early June. However, if a copy is needed, call Mary Kalkwarf at 283-1747 and leave a message.

The assignment will be due the first day of school.

Students who want to brush up on their math skills for the state's math proficiency exam can go to www.americanbookscompany.com, and purchase two books for $24 called "Basics Made Easy" and "Passing the Nevada High School Proficiency Exam." The books provide practice materials. Math help is also available at www.pre-alg.com and www.mcdougallittell.com.

Washoe County health department launches chronic-disease prevention Web site

Washoe County District Health Department officials have announced the inauguration of a interactive Web site to respond to the growing rates of chronic disease in Northern Nevada. The new community-focused site is at www.gethealthywashoe.com

"Our new Web site is a community resource for chronic disease information and local activities," said District Health Officer Barbara Lee Hunt.

"Most importantly, it is a message of encouragement for individuals to prevent chronic disease in the future by living healthy today."

Chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and diabetes are the leading causes of death and disability not only in Washoe County but also throughout the United States.

They account for seven out of every 10 deaths nationwide and adversely affect the quality of life of more than 90 million Americans.

But even though chronic diseases are among the most common and costly health problems, they are also among the most preventable.

Adopting healthy behaviors such as eating healthy foods, being physically active, and avoiding tobacco can prevent or control the devastating effects of these health issues.
