AmeriCorps graduates honored at ComputerCorps

ComputerCorps' "No Computer Left Behind" AmeriCorps program is pleased to announce the graduation of six AmeriCorps members from the "Fundamentals of Inventory Control" class. The nationally certified class was presented by APICS.

The one-of-a-kind AmeriCorps program at ComputerCorps includes 11 minimum-security inmates at Nevada State Prison. These members are receiving training in A+ and N+ certification, citizenship, forklift certification, warehouse and operational safety, oscilloscope training, and APICS training.

While participating in this program, these members are assisting in the recruitment of volunteers at ComputerCorps. The members are also assisting with educating the public and businesses in Northern Nevada regarding the hazards of eWaste in our environment.

Six members from this class will be honored at 11 a.m. today at 6373 Highway 50 E. in Carson City. The CEO of ComputerCorps, Ron Norton and Rick Leach, the vice president of APICS, will make presentations. Lunch will follow immediately after the award ceremony.

ComputerCorps is a nationally nonprofit corporation dedicated to providing access to computer technology and skills training for all while eliminating eWaste in our landfill. ComputerCorps is comprised of an army of technical, administrative and facilities volunteers.

More than 1,600 volunteers have invested more that 200,000 hours of service since 1997.

Evening of Hispanic heritage at state museum

The Nevada State Museum offers a spectacular evening of Hispanic Heritage from 6-8:30 p.m. today. The event is free to the public and begins with a performance by the International Folkloric Ballet. The dance will be followed by Expressions of the Soul, a poetry reading featuring Peruvian-born Roy Chavez Alvarado, who will share his love of poetry by reading from his recent works in both Spanish and English.

For budding writers, Chavez will present a free, small-group writing workshop on from 2-4 p.m. Saturday. Advanced registration is required; call 687-4810, ext. 237.

'Wild, Wild West' to show at Railroad Museum

Outdoor movie night returns Wednesday at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City.

Showing of "The Wild Wild West" starts at 7:30 p.m. The night begins with a speaker on the making of the film followed by the movie. Watch for more on Walt Disney's involvement with railroading at August's movie event.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum is celebrating its Silver Anniversary. Since 1980, the rich railroading heritage of northern Nevada has been kept alive at the museum.

Cops take on firefighters in battle for most tips

Applebee's restaurant will host Battle for the Tips to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation and The Children's Cabinet from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Thursday.

The event will pit the police department against the fire department in a "battle" to see who can raise the most tips.

The fire department will be raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, while the police department will be raising funds for The Children's Cabinet.

Beginner art classes for adults at Children's Museum

Adult art classes for the absolute beginner will be taught Thursdays at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St.

Classes will be held Thursdays July 14, 21, Aug. 4 and 18. Media is acrylic mixed.

Cost is $85 per person plus cost of supplies. There will be free makeup days for conflicts.
