George A. Schaad

A funeral for George A. Schaad, 97, a Dayton resident for the past 37 years, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Walton's Funeral Home in Reno.

Mr. Schaad died July 15, 2005.

As a teenager in New Jersey, his first job was converting gas lanterns to electricity in homes. He became an electrical engineer and was employed by Los Angeles Water and Power Co. until his retirement in 1968. He then worked for Sacoma Sierra Manufacturing in Carson City for seven years.

He was active in the Dayton Valley Fire Department as assistant fire chief and chief engineer. In 1978, he was named Man of the Year for the Dayton Fire Department.

Mr. Schaad served in the U.S. Navy. He donated hundreds of hours to the American Legion Color Guard.

Among his survivors are his wife, Evelyn Gourley Schaad; brother, Howard; and son, George A. Jr.

Burial will be in San Diego, Calif.

Walton Funeral Home Reno is in charge of arrangements.
