Officials to participate in televised planning discussion

Residents of Carson City and its surrounding counties will have a chance Thursday to have questions about the future of the area answered by the experts.

Carson's community cable channel, CAT10, will air live a meeting among Carson City Principal Planner Lee Plemel, Lyon County Planning Director Steve Hasson and Douglas County Planning Manager Mimi Moss about the bordering counties' master plans.

According to the Carson-Douglas Leadership Alumni Association, which is hosting the televised conference, the discussion will include how the counties work together, what the public can do to help and what an ideal planning outcome of the tri-county region might be.

"It's nice to get everyone together," Plemel said. "It's a good opportunity."

While transportation issues are addressed regionwide through the Nevada Department of Transportation and agencies like the Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, there is less communication when it comes to many land-use decisions.

"There hasn't been a lot of inter-county planning. That's the purpose of having this kind of a meeting," Plemel said.

Carson City has, however, been in contact with Douglas County officials while working on a new Master Plan, which is now being devised.

There has also been communication between the two counties about a Carson City subdivision near Racetrack Road and a Douglas County development near Clear Creek Road, both at the county line and both being opposed in state court.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center and Carson-Douglas Leadership graduates and members of the public are encouraged to attend.

There is limited space at the community center, however, and Ron Kendall, the leadership alumni president, suggests attendees arrive a little early.

The group hosted and moderated a televised water issues discussion in April with officials from Carson City, Douglas County, Lyon County and the Carson Water Subconservancy District.

If Thursday's meeting comes off well, Kendall said it could lead to a monthly program.

The alumni association, consisting of local residents who have graduated from a Chamber of Commerce leadership course, aims to inspire leadership program graduates to help local officials address critical issues, Kendall said.
