Graduates: strive to change the world

It's an exciting season for the Nevada Appeal, and it's not just because the Legislature was to end Monday night after 120 days of politicking and bargaining - it's graduation season.

We're busy. Trying to get to more than a dozen high schools as most students mark the end of their longest of educational careers with some pomp and circumstance is a bit hectic. But we spoke with some soon-to-be graduates who are busy planning their parties, their first apartments and their continuing education. They want to be a chef, a dermatologist, a hairstylist, a nurse, a firefighter and a psychologist. Their dreams are big. Their dreams are our future. Their dreams are our dreams.

Their families, and we as a part of the community it takes to "raise a child," send them out into the world to fail where they will and learn what they can.

We do this all with the hope that we can count on them to always be better at everything than we ever were.

Our future as a world depends on these generations that graduate each year to: find the cure for cancer, stop global warming, bring peace to Earth.

We estimate that in the Appeal's circulation area, more than 2,500 students will pass this bridge in the two weeks between June 4 and 17. Some have cruised through their educational careers; others have worked very hard. Some cross with sadness looking back at the good times, or flee these years with glee, reveling in their first tastes of freedom.

We congratulate them for reaching this goal in their young lives and challenge them to strive to change the world.

And in the words of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, we remind them to "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."
