WNCC soccer receives $10,000

Western Nevada Community College's new women's soccer team has received two $5,000 donations from Carson City's American Youth Soccer Organization and Capital Soccer Club.

The money will be used to support the operation of the team, which receives no state funding.

WNCC coach Hillary Arthur said she is enthused by the support the community has given to the Wildcat team.

"I'd like to thank Capital Soccer and the AYSO for their generous donations to the WNCC women's soccer program," Arthur said. "Without these two organizations and their continued support, we wouldn't be here."

Eric Ingbar, head of the local AYSO, said the donation was made to support one of the organization's major goals.

"AYSO supports youth soccer at all levels and one of our long-term goals has been to help players continue playing while continuing their education," Ingbar said. "The WNCC Wildcats new women's team is perfect for area girls who want to play soccer close to home and get a college degree."

"It's great that area athletes now have the opportunity to play soccer while furthering their education and perhaps getting a chance to continue at the Division I level at a four-year college," said Greg Davis of the Capital Soccer Club.

The WNCC Wildcats are Division I members of the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Scenic West Athletic Conference. They begin competing in August with their first home games at Edmonds Park in WNCC's Labor Day Classic Tournament. The Wildcats are scheduled to play Feather River College of California and SWAC member North Idaho College in the tournament.
