Driver killed in Incline Village accident

NCLINE VILLAGE - One person was killed Wednesday in an afternoon accident on Country Club Drive.

The accident occurred about 12:45 p.m. when a single vehicle struck a tree near Village Boulevard, according to the Washoe County Sheriff's Department. The lone occupant, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Placer County Sheriff's Office, Nevada State Parks and Animal Control responded.

Suspected robber killed by tribal police

RENO - A robbery at an Indian smoke shop in Reno turned deadly Wednesday when a tribal police officer chasing the fleeing suspect apparently shot and killed him.

A law officer for the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony shot the suspected robber about 3 p.m., a Reno television station reported.

The victim, an adult male, reportedly robbed the smoke shop on Second Street east of downtown and fled on foot through the neighborhood on tribal land, KRNV-TV reported.

The officer shot the suspect a few blocks away in the yard of a home in the area of Park and Golden streets, the station said.

FBI agents joined tribal police and Reno police in investigating because the colony is on federal land. No other details were available.

Explosives truck overturns near Nixon

RENO - A truck carrying explosive materials overturned on a rural highway northeast of Reno Wednesday, forcing the road's closure for much of the day.

The Nevada Highway Patrol said the truck carried 23,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate and blasting caps. The driver and a passenger suffered minor injuries when it overturned around 6:30 a.m. on State Route 447 near Nixon.

A bomb squad was called in as the spill was cleaned up and the highway was reopened shortly after 4 p.m.

The truck is owned by Golden State Explosives of Plymouth, Calif., the patrol said. It was headed for Empire, just south of Gerlach.

The driver and passenger were transported to Washoe Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.
