Carson City

Phone cards, DVD needed for troops

Mike's Pharmacy is collecting CDs, DVDs, AT&T Phone Cards and cash through June 2 for the Northern Nevada National Guard Unit 1864, currently deployed in the Middle East.

Unit 1864 is based in Reno and its soldiers are from across Northern Nevada. Their call sign is "Nevada Trucks." They are serving in the Middle East until late fall.

The community is asked to help provide the troops with entertainment and diversion for "down time." The final day of collection includes KOH's Bill Manders with a live, remote broadcast from 3-6 p.m.

Mike's Pharmacy is at 1007 N. Curry St., at the corner of W. William St. Call 841-1400.

Flags to be placed on veterans' graves

Veterans organizations in the Carson City area will be putting U.S. flags on veterans graves at the veterans section of Lone Mountain Cemetery at 4 p.m. Friday. Other groups that will be assisting are local Boys Scouts and JNROTC cadets. Families who have veterans buried outside of the cemetery's veterans section are encouraged to be present to receive a flag they can place on the veteran's grave. Following Veteran's Day activities on Monday, at 4 p.m., flags will be removed from the graves.

Food distribution for needy begins Friday

The USDA Commodity Food distribution will be from 9-11 a.m. Friday at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St. This month's commodities include pineapple juice, peaches, instant milk, chocolate pudding, egg noodles, kernel corn, apricot halves, pears and pinto beans.

Any needy family in the Carson City area can be eligible. The household must simply sign the Daily Issuance Sheet at the Community Center, certifying that their household's annual income does not exceed 150 percent of the poverty guidelines. Those income guidelines are currently $14,965 for a single and $18,735 for a couple. No application or proof of income will be required, only a picture ID/driver's license. Food may be picked up for those unable to attend by bringing a signed note from them and their picture ID.

Douglas County

Annual rummage sale slated for weekend

The Carson Valley United Methodist church, located at 1375 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville, will be holding its annual rummage sale from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. The final hour of the sale on Saturday will be a "buck a bag" for clothing and half price for all other items. There will be several items offered in a silent auction because of their uniqueness and/or value.
