Two motorcyclists were injured when they hit the curb and skidded into the dirt shoulder of Highway 50 below Spooner Summit Sunday evening.

The accident occurred at 6:35 p.m. 1 1/2 miles from the intersection of Highway 395.

A man and woman were taken by Care Flight helicopter to Washoe Medical Center "with extensive injuries," according to Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong.

The pair was traveling westbound when they "hit curbing and skidded 60 feet into the dirt," Furlong said. One of the westbound lanes of Highway 50 was closed for several hours.

In addition to Carson City sheriff's deputies, Nevada Highway Patrol and Carson City and Douglas County fire personnel responded.
