All-Sierra Nevada teams chosen

Volleyball

Katrina Kacirek, sr., Whittell: All-Northern 2A first team.

Jessica Woods, jr., Whittell: Northern 2A Co-Player of the Year helped lead Whittell to its third straight state title.

Kelly Karmann, jr., Whittell: Was Northern 2A Co-Player of the Year along with Woods.

Monica Knight, sr., Douglas: All-Sierra League first team.

Whitney Estes, Douglas, sr.: All-Sierra League first-team.

Lindsay Ford, jr., Carson: The junior earned All-Sierra League second team. She had 380 assists, 120 digs and 75 blocks. She has also been chosen to participate in a prestigious national tournament this summer in Hawai'i.

Catherine Brekken, Carson, sr.: All-Sierra League first team. She averaged 3.5 kills and just under two blocks a game. She finished with 280 kills, 100 digs and 170 blocks.

Julia and Lydia Mailander, Galena, sr.: Leaders for back-to-back state championship teams that have gone 76-13 the last two seasons. The 6-footers were High Desert League co-Players of the Year and both have signed to play with Yale.

Julia had 155 kills, 11 aces, 88 digs and 16 blocks in 12 league matches. Lydia had 133 kills, five aces, 92 digs and 17 blocks in league.

Nancy Burrows, Galena, jr.: Another 6-footer for the Grizzlies who was named all-league first team as a middle blocker. She had 95 kills, 10 aces, 90 digs and 51 blocks in league.

Thalia McCann, Galena, soph: All-league first team as a setter. She had 37 kills, 340 assists, 59 digs, 28 blocks and 21 aces in league.

Jessica Bettencourt, South Tahoe, sr.: All-league first team.

Jessica Daum, sr., Fallon. All-league first team and Sierra Nevada Media all-Northern first team.

Rachel Ericson, sr., North Tahoe: A force to be reckoned with at the net. Ericson led the team in kills and had the vert to get up and the power to knock the ball down, a combo that was rarely stopped by opponents. Usually around 20 kills per game.

Dawson Joyce-Mendive, Douglas, sr.: All-league first team.

Katy Marsh, Douglas, jr.: Setter and Sierra League Player of the Year for the Tigers, who went 28-8 and finished as Northern 4A Regional runner-up.

Girls soccer

Sammy Valerius, Carson, sr.: All-Sierra League first team. She scored 11 goals as a defender.

Cassie Bowman, Carson, sr.: Sierra League Midfielder of the Year for the second straight season. She scored 12 goals.

Kasey Cano, Carson, sr.: All-Sierra League second team. She had 10 goals and 12 assists.

Danielle Benamati, Carson, jr.: All-Sierra League first team. She led the team with 18 goals.

Brandi Vega, Carson, fr.: Sierra League Offensive Player of the Year. She had nine goals and 15 assists.

Caitlin Anderson, Galena, sr: Anderson came up huge in a shootout against Reed in the Northern 4A semifinals, helping the Grizzlies to the win on their way to a second straight Northern 4A title. Anderson has signed to play basketball at Weber State. All-High Desert League first team and an All-Carson Country pick last year. She had 13 shutouts in 20 games and gave up just 11 goals for the entire season.

Libby Walker, Galena, so.: High Desert League Offensive Player of the Year. Was named All-Carson Country last year. She had 11 goals and sevena assists.

Abbie Walker, Galena, sr.: High Desert League Defensive Player of the Year. Was named All-Carson Country last year. She had six goals and four assists.

Hillary Winans, Douglas, jr.: All-league first team goalkeeper who posted three shutouts this season.

Morgan Lefever, Douglas, jr.: All-league first team pick who had 14 goals and six assists this season.

Michele Zarick, North Tahoe: While only a sophomore, the forward was a leader on attack. Her speed and nose for the goal lead to a lot of goals..

Melissa Kleffman, sr., Truckee: 14 goals and 11 assists in the regular season. Had a breakout year in which she scored many of her goals in Truckee's biggest games.

Whitney Hardy, Truckee: Midfielder had 10 goals and six assists during the regular season. The team captain and leader on the field.

Ashley Winter, Dayton, jr.: A playmaker at center halfback who had 14 goals and 12 assists. She helped Dayton to its best season (12-5-1) and earned first-team all-league honors for the second straight year. An honorable mention all-state pick.

Janneal Perraso, South Tahoe, so.: All-Sierra League first team.

Boys soccer

Sam Rojas, Carson, jr.: All-Sierra League first team as a defender, also had two goals and an assist.

Enrique Mendoza, Carson, jr.: All-Sierra League first team. He had seven goals and nine assists.

Edgar Gomez, Carson, sr.: All-Sierra League first team. He had 11 goals and two assists.

Bud Kop, Carson, sr.: All-Sierra League first team as a goalie, posted seven shutouts and allowed 22 goals in 19 games for a 1.16 average.

Ismael Mora, South Tahoe Sierra League Defensive Player of the Year.

Ernesto Mosqueda, South Tahoe, sr.: Sierra League Offensive Player of the Year.

Jamie Estrada, South Tahoe. Sierra League Midfielder of the Year.

Matt Thompson, South Tahoe. All-league second team as a defender. Was a standout in the playoffs during the Vikings run to the state title.

David Sturgess, Douglas, sr.: All-league first-team for his play as an attacking midfielder for the Tigers. Led the team in scoring with 23 goals and seven assists (Tigers scored 70 goals total). Was injured five of those games. Very productive. He was a varsity starter in each of his four seasons at Douglas. Student body president and an academic standout. Well-rounded student.

Martin Rubio, Douglas, sr.: All-league first-team as a defensive midfielder in the Tigers 4-4-2 scheme. An unsung hero who has come a long way. Helped control middle defensively and a distributor on offense with numerous assists and double-assists. He was designated penalty kicker with his powerful foot.

Enrique Martinez, Galena, sr.: High Desert League Offensive Player of the Year. He was part of a 1-2 offensive punch with Daniel Hedrick as he assisted on most of Hedrick's goals and vica versa. He had 18 goals and 10 assists. "That kid's the most unselfish player I've ever had in my life," Galena coach Marco Merlo said.

Daniel Hedrick, Galena, sr.: High Desert League Midfielder of the Year. Hedrick had 12 goals and 15 assists.

Kyle Lancaster, Galena, sr.: High Desert League Defensive Player of the Year. He was a big reason why Galena posted 10 shutouts this season.

Scott Eberhardt, Truckee, sr.: Midfielder had nine goals and five assists during the regular season. Was a versatile player and dangerous striker in which the team rallied around.

Al Virrey, Truckee, soph: Had 13 goals and four assists during the regular season. He was capable of scoring from anywhere on the field.

Juan Vazquez, North Tahoe: Vazquez was a major playmaker for North Tahoe, his vision and intellegence coupled with his deft ball handling was a big offensive asset to the Lakers.

Matt Bagan, North Tahoe: As a winger, Bagan tirelessly ran up and down the field, crossing balls in and getting back on defense. A tenacious player with excelent vision and knowledge of the game.

James Stubbs, Fallon: All-High Desert League first team.

Scott Wardwell, Fallon: All-league second team.

Football

QB - Travis Wood, Dayton, jr.: An All-Carson Country QB last year, Wood completed 119 passes for 2,046 yards and 16 touchdowns while leading Dayton into the 3A state semifinals.

RB - Bryan Maffei, Carson, sr.: Rushed for 1,505 yards on 215 carries for a 7.0 yard average with 15 touchdowns. Sierra League co-offensive player of the year. All-region first team. A two-time all-Sierra League first team performer.

RB - Ryan Krueger, Galena, sr.: Gained 1,559 yards on 240 carries for a 6.7 yard average and 17 touchdowns. He also returned three kickoffs for touchdowns.

FB - Jimmmy Sargent, Galena, jr.: He gained 653 yards on 107 carries and rushed for three touchdowns and also had a touchdown reception. On defense he had six sacks, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

WR - Brandon Peterson, Truckee, sr.: Caught 24 passes for 591 yards for a 25 yard average and also had eight touchdown catches during the regular season.

WR - Jordan Stokes, Dayton, sr.: Caught 47 passes for 860 yards for an 18.3 yard average.

WR - Travis McCurry, Fernley, jr.: was a versatile performer for the Vaqueros who could score from anywhere on the field as a return specialist, receiver or runner. His kickoff return for a touchdown was a key play in the Vaqueros' 42-34 win over Dayton, securing the Golden Pick for Fernley. Also named All-Carson Country last year.

WR - Scott Witter, Carson, sr.: A repeat all-league first-team wide receiver and All-Carson Country pick. He had 37 catches for two touchdowns. His 37 receptions was second in the Northern 4A. All-region second team.

Utility - Erik Hopper, Dayton, jr.: Gained 1,236 yards on 125 carries for a 9.9 yard average and was also a dangerous receiver.

Utility - Ben Tonon, Truckee, sr.: Gained 575 yards rushing on 46 carries for an 11.0 yard average and also rushed for 11 TDs during the regular season. He added 308 yards receiving and three TDs on 21 catches.

KR - Rick Cornu, Fallon: All-Northern 4A second team and all-High Desert League first team as a receiver.

TE - Evan Thomas, North Tahoe: A workhorse on the end of NT's line. Also an inspiration to players, pushing through a fractured vertebrae until he was eventually pulled out due to risk of serious and tragic injury. Was named MVP and Most Inspirational. Two year captain.

TE - Lyle Gardner, Fallon: All-league second team.

Line - Eric Walther, Carson, sr.: All-league first team and all-region first team as a center and second team all-league as a defensive end

Line - Zach Taylor, Carson, sr.: All-league first team as an offensive guard and defense tackle and all-region first team as a defensive tackle. All-region second team as an offensive guard.

Line - Ryan Guzman, Douglas: Second team all-sierra league offensive guard. Was a solid defensive lineman with four sacks and a forced fumble.

Line - Cory Fry, Douglas: All-Sierra League second team tackle. Had one fumble forced. Gritty blocker offensively.

Line - Ryan Gilmore, Yerington. Was named the Northern 2A'S Lineman of the Year.

Line - James Ripson, Galena, sr. Was named to the all-Northern 4A first team.

DEFENSE

Line - Riley Allanson, Truckee, sr.: Known as a hard hitter who has laid out a lot of hard hits on the opposition this year.

Line - Kyle Steverman, Truckee, sr.: An excellent pass rusher who had numerous sacks.

Line - Jorge Vasquez, Truckee, sr.: Described as an animal on the field and certainly a force in the state championship game against Virgin Valley.

Line - James Barnard, Douglas: First-team all-region defensive tackle, three sacks, two fumble recoveries and a blocked punt.

LB - Matt Klesken, Truckee, sr. A player who seemed to be all over the field - and delivering hard hits all over the field.

LB - Brent Koontz, Douglas: Shifted over to middle linebacker from the outside halfway through the season. Had two interceptions. A first-team All-Sierra Leaguer and first-team all-region pick at linebacker. Second-team All-Sierra League tight end with 16 catches for 216 yards and three touchdowns.

LB - David Hyde, Fallon: All-Norther 4A second team and all-league first team.

LB - Jason Dittenber, Carson, sr.: All-league first team and all-region second team. He had more than 90 tackles which led the team.

LB - Casey Ernst, Galena, sr.: A third-year varsity starter who earned All-Carson Country pick last year. He caught 22 passes and had three touchdown catches. On defense, he had 122 tackles, 16 for loss and six forced fumbles.

LB - Ryan Pruitt, Douglas: Second team all-Sierra League pick. Hard hitter that found his way to the heart of every play.

LB - Cole Dowty, Galena, sr.: He had six sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

DB - John Hooper, Truckee, sr.: An all-Northern 3A first team performer last year, had another solid season despite an ankle injury.

DB - Cole Hamzik, Douglas: First-team All-Sierra League pick and second-team all-region. Had two interceptions on the year. Stepped in at quarterback for the tigers with two games left in the season and threw for 447 yards and four touchdowns in three starts including the playoffs.

DB - Tony Fritsche, Galena, sr.: Athletic enough to be the state pole vault champion last spring. Fritsche caught 16 passes for 340 yards and four touchdowns. On defense,he had three interceptions and a blocked punt for a touchdown.

DB - Jordan Arnold, Galena, sr.: He caught 15 passes for 255 yards and five touchdowns. One of the leaders in the Yellow Swarm defense, he intercepted three passes and returned one 100 yards for a touchdown in the playoffs against McQueen.

DB - Ryan Jesse, Carson, sr.: A All-Sierra League first team and all-region second team. He had three interceptions.
