A Carson City man was in custody Monday charged with raping a Fernley woman at his William Street apartment.

John Hoffer, 32, was booked into the Carson City Jail on suspicion of felony sexual assault and battery with intent to commit sexual assault. He's being held on $100,000 bail.

According to police reports, the "hysterical" 35-year-old woman went into the Albertsons grocery store on North Carson Street about 11:45 p.m. Sunday and told someone there she'd been assaulted.

When police arrived, she said she'd gone to Hoffer's apartment near Jack In The Box to use his phone while his brother, Chad, borrowed a 2002 Toyota Camry she was driving.

"At that time, (Hoffer) grabbed the victim, threw her on the bed, took her clothes off and sexually assaulted her," the arrest report states.

The woman said she was assaulted twice more before Chad Hoffer allegedly returned with the vehicle, drove her to Washoe Valley and left her at a gas station there, driving off in the vehicle. A friend picked her up from Washoe Valley some hours later and dropped her at Albertsons.

Investigators found John Hoffer at his apartment in the 300 block of East William Street about 12:40 a.m. and placed him under arrest.

He was serving a house arrest sentence on a federal charge and is monitored by an electronic anklet. The details of that charge were not available.

Detective Bob Motamenpour said Chad Hoffer, 30, was arrested Monday in Sparks about 2 p.m. after he got into a dispute with a girlfriend. Earlier in the day he called the owner of the vehicle and said he would leave the car in a gas station parking lot. The Camry was recovered and Hoffer was booked into Washoe County Jail on domestic battery charges. Motamenpour said its possible he could be charged with theft of the vehicle.
