Scurry signs to play baseball with Nevada

Galena High graduate Rod Scurry is among six players the University of Nevada baseball team who has signed during the fall signing period.

Scurry, Brock Kjeldgaard, Andy Primas and Mikal Garbarino all signed on Monday. They joined Matt Keplinger and Shawn Kort, who signed last week.

Scurry, a 6-6, 200-pound right-handed pitcher, is a sophomore at Sierra Community College in Rocklin, Calif. He was drafted in the 39th round of the 2005 Major League draft by the Colorado Rockies.

Kjeldgaard is a 6-5, 205-pound right-handed pitcher from London, Ontario, Canada. Currently he is a sophomore at Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, Iowa. He was selected in the 34th round of the 2005 MLB draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. Playing for team Ontario he helped the team capture the Gold Medal at the Canada Summer Games.

A 6-2, 180-pound right-handed closer/utility player, Primas is a sophomore at Southern Nevada Community College in Henderson, Nev. In 17 relief appearances last spring he posted a 4-0 record with seven saves and a 2.03 earned run average for a team that was 46-14.

The seven saves led the Scenic West Athletic Conference. At the plate he hit .333 with two doubles and 13 RBI in limited action. The Henderson, Nev., product posted a 7-1 record with a 2.23 earned run average, and hit .430 with four home runs, and 36 RBI his senior year at Centennial High.

An all-district, and first-team All-San Gabriel Valley infield selection, Garbarino is a senior at San Dimas (Calif.) High. His junior year he hit .440 and stole 20 bases, hit 15 doubles, and belted three home runs. He participated in the Area Code Games.

"With addition of these four players we have now signed six outstanding players during the early signing period," Nevada coach Gary Powers said. "We continue to look for talent and may sign an additional player during the early period but I'm happy with the six that have already signed.

"We solidified our pitching staff for the next couple of years, with one of the pitchers being a two-way player, and added a solid infielder to our team for the future. We are really excited about all of these excellent players and truly look forward to having all of them in Wolf Pack uniforms in 2007."

VOLLEYBALL

Nevada's volleyball team also signed four players - Sage Aune, Lelani Kleman-Maeva, Sonnie Sei and Jorgan Staker.

Aune is a 6-2 middle blocker who attends Brighton High in Sandy, Utah. In 2004 she garnered honorable mention all-state honors.

"Sage brings needed height to our middle, as well as a huge love for the game," Nevada coach Devin Scruggs said. "She has experienced great success both on her club and high school team. I look for her to bring intensity and passion to the gym every day."

A 5-11 outside hitter Kleman-Maeva is a senior at Aiea High in Aiea, Hawaii. She earned Junior Olympic All-America honors this past summer playing for the Quicksets Volleyball Club. As a junior she was the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Player of the Year.

Additional honors her junior year included being named to the Honolulu Advertiser all-state first-team.

"Lelani is a very strong all around player who has the ball control and the offense to make an impact right away," said Scruggs. "She was one of the top players to come out of Hawaii and we are very pleased that she has chosen to play for the Wolf Pack."

Sei is a 5-10 setter who played locally for the Sierra Nevada Volleyball Club and attended Loyalton (Calif.) High. She is the first volleyball player from Loyalton to receive an athletic scholarship to a Division I school.

This past summer she helped her club team to finish in the top 6 in the region, and the squad qualified for the Junior Olympics.

"Sonnie is a fantastic setter, who we have followed locally for the last couple of years," said Scruggs. "She has been trained by my staff through the Sierra Nevada Volleyball club, which has given her a jump start to the way we do things."

At 6-1 Staker could be used at right side or outside hitter. This past summer she garnered Junior Olympic All-America honors competing for Summit Volleyball Club. An outstanding student at Taylorsville High in Taylorsville, Utah she was named to the 2005 Class 5A Academic All-State team. Her junior year she was a second-team all-state selection.

"Jorgan brings a very different look to our right side," added Scruggs. "She is a tall left handed, right side player who could see court time right away. She is a phenomenal blocker, a very good offensive player, and a great competitor who has a very good understanding of the game."

"I am extremely pleased with our incoming recruiting class in 2006. I would compare it to the 1998 class that was ranked in the top 15 in the country. All four players bring experience, success, and athleticism to our program."
