Getting ready for the opener

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) has been busy as a bee, planting many tens of thousands of trout in Topaz Lake on the Nevada/California stateline in preparation for that lake's seasonal opener on Jan. 1, 2006.

The season will open one hour before sunrise on that January morning.

Here is what NDOW has planted so far:

Oct. 5: 9,774 rainbow trout, 7.7 inches in length.

Oct. 6: 10,819 rainbows, 7.6 inches.

Oct. 10: 11,846 rainbows, 7.5 inches.

Oct. 13: 10,647 rainbows, 7.77 inches.

Oct. 20: 5,681 rainbows, 9.4 inches.

Oct. 21: 2,504 rainbows, 8,1 inches.

Oct. 21: 2,500 rainbows, 7.6 inches.

Oct. 21: 1,535 rainbows, 9.3 inches.

Oct. 31: 5,454 rainbows, 9.6 inches.
