Nevada Magazine's Historical Calendar on sale now

Nevada Magazine's 2006 Nevada Historical Calendar, which features a hand-tinted color cover and more than a dozen historic photos, is available.

Last day to submit grants for historic preservation projects

The application deadline for federal historic preservation grants administered by the State Historic Preservation Office is today. Grant funding is provided by the National Park Service as part of the Land and Water Conservation Fund and is used to support preservation efforts by governmental agencies and nonprofit organizations.

Grants may be used to support building rehabilitation, historic preservation surveys and projects that promote heritage tourism throughout the state. The restoration of Reno's Lear Theater and the Las Vegas Post Office, and survey work in Southern Nevada are examples of projects that received funding through this program.

The State Historic Preservation Office also administers grants from the Commission for Cultural Affairs used to support the rehabilitation of historic structures to be used as cultural centers. Applications for Commission for Cultural Affairs grants were due in October, and will be reviewed in March.

Apply beginning today for seasonal firefighter slots

The Bureau of Land Management in Nevada will begin accepting applications for temporary seasonal firefighting positions throughout the state today. Applications must be submitted no later than Dec. 8 to receive first consideration in the hiring process.

The second cut-off date for temporary seasonal fire fighter applications will be Jan. 7; the third cut-off date will be Jan. 30.

Temporary seasonal positions will be filled as engine, helitack and hotshot crew members, as well as aircraft ramp personnel and dispatchers stationed at 24 fire stations throughout the state. Applications for firefighting and dispatch positions must be submitted using the BLM's automated application system, called FIRES, available on the Internet at: http://www.firejobs.doi.gov

Length of appointment varies, depending on agency needs and funding, but cannot exceed 180 days, excluding overtime and training, during a service year.

Salary for these positions ranges from $9.64-$13.21 per hour. A normal term of employment is from June 1 through mid-September.

Selected applicants must complete a pre-employment drug screening and physical examination prior to appointment. Those selected for primary firefighter positions must also pass the "pack test" consisting of a three-mile walk over flat terrain carrying a 45-pound pack in 45 minutes or less.

Capitol tree lighting set for this evening

Silver & Snowflakes Holiday Tree Lighting will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m. this evening. Festivities begin on the Capitol grounds.

The state trees will be lit, Santa will give out candy canes, and the 250 voices of the Carson City Fifth-Grade Music Students Singing Ensemble will sing, accompanied by the Carson Middle School Red Hot Bell Peppers handbell choir. Santa arrives in a decorated 1926 Model T, driven by Beau the dog.

Sixteen creative willow "reindeer" made the week of the event by local school children and Boy Scouts, under the guidance of "Willow" Bill, will be placed on the Capitol lawn and lit with white lights.

The Silver & Snowflakes Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony is coordinated by the Arlington Group for the Office of the Governor and Carson City Redevelopment.
