Andrew Stephenson, 16, of Carson City received his glider wings in a presentation in Minden on Oct. 13. CAP Col. Russell Smith, acting commander of the Minden Composite Squadron made the presentation.
Stephenson is a CAP cadet lieutenant and the cadet commander of the Minden unit. CAP has a fly cadet day on the second Saturday of every month. All cadets who want to fly may do so. One of Stephenson's objectives is to become a fully rated pilot before he graduates from high school.
Stephenson is a junior at Carson High School. He is on the honor roll and a member of JROTC, for which he is an ensign and platoon commander. Also, he is on the cross country and rifle teams.
Stephenson will attend the National Youth Leadership Alumni Association in Washington D.C., on Jan. 14-16. He would like to attend a military academy after graduation.
Stephenson won a $600 scholarship for part of his flight training by applying for the Michael Wallace Youth Soaring Scholarship. The Minden Soaring Club provided another $1,200, and his late Aunt Marie provided $600.
