A memorial service for Mary H. Settelmeyer-Fair, 99, of Gardnerville, will be 11 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gardnerville.

Mrs. Settelmeyer died March 30, 2006, at her home. She was born Jan. 3, 1907, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Maggie Rose and Charles H. Hancock. The family relocated to Fallon when homestead land opened up, and later to Reno so that the children could attend college.

She received a degree in education at the University of Nevada, Reno.

She taught high school business classes in Lovelock and Douglas County.

She wrote a column for The Record-Courier newspaper, in which she interviewed long-time residents. The columns were later compiled into a book titled "Spinnings." She earned a Nevada State Press Association award for rural columns.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and the Carson Valley Historical Society.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Francis in 1950; first husband, Lawrence Settelmeyer, in 1985; brother, Mel Hancock; and second husband, Ralph Fair, in 1999.

Among her survivors are her daughter and son-in-law Charlotte and Douglas Bass and granddaughters Angela and Laura Scarselli.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
