Carson softball falls to Manogue

The Carson High softball team ended a tough weekend at the Reed Tournament with a 15-8 loss to Manogue on Saturday.

Carson went 0-4 in the event after coming in on a hot streak. "We were really riding high coming in. We kind of struggled in all three aspects of the game," said Carson coach Scott Vickrey on his team's hitting, fielding and pitching.

"We didn't reach the level that I was looking for. It tells us we've got a little work to do before we go into zone."

Manogue outhit Carson just 9-8, but the Senators made five errors while the Miners made just two in the windy conditions. "Nothing was routine," Vickrey said.

Carson took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Candice Rutledge's home run. But Manogue took advantage of two hits, two erros and two walks to take a 6-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning.

The Senators closed to within 6-5 in the third, but Manogue answered with four runs in the bottom half to take a 10-5 lead. Carson closed to within 10-8 in the fourth, but Manogue scored five in the bottom half. The game was called after four innings due to a time limit.

Dacey Hassey had two hits, including a solo homer and Kaitlin Burroughs, Abby Rankl, Cassie Vondrak, Desiree Clampitt and Sarah Evans all added a hit for Carson, which returns to Sierra League action a week from Tuesday against South Tahoe.

CARSON JVS

The Carson junior varsity softball team won the Spanish Springs Tournament consolation title by beating Damonte Ranch 8-0 in the finals. Jaime Good pitched a four-hit shutout for the win.

Tami Conn had a hit and two runs, Erin Johanssen had three hits, two RBI and a run, Belen Munoz had two hits and two runs and Kristina Diamond had three hits and three RBI.

Carson advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-2 win over Coleville. Carson trailed 2-0 when it scored three runs in the sixth.

Tami Conn doubled and scored on Rebecca Gansberg's single. Carson eventually took the lead when Melissa Coyle scored and Gansberg scored all the way from second on a squeeze bunt by Munoz.

Conn had three hits and also had a triple. Jessie Sinclair pitched a two-hitter for the win.

Carson lost 12-2 in the quarterfinals to Reed. Johanssen had two hits and scored both of Carson's runs.

Carson came back to beat North Valleys 15-2. Coyle pitched a four-hitter for the win.

Conn went 3-for-4 with three runs, Johanssen and Gansberg each had two hits, two RBI and two runs, Munoz was 3-for-3 with two runs, and Magan Rogers had three hits, five RBI and one run.
