Carson baseball falls

The Carson High baseball team struggled offensively in a 4-2 loss to Pioneer Valley of Santa Maria, Calif., on Wednesday in the Righetti Tournament in Santa Maria.

Carson could only muster four hits as 18 of its 21 outs came either by flyballs or strikeouts.

"We struggled at the plate," Carson coach Steve Cook said. "We just didn't hit the ball very well. They played a pretty good game on the other side.

"We still had a chance to win the game. We didn't play very well offensively.

"I was disappointed in our offensive output. We didn't put any pressure on their defense."

The Senators were solid in the other two aspects of the game as they received outstanding pitching from Jack Jacquet. "He threw very well," Cook said.

Jacquet used his defense as he only struck out two, but also walked just two in scattering six hits while giving up three earned runs. Pioneer Valley scored twice in the second inning and twice in the third to take a 4-0 lead.

Carson scored once in the fourth and once in the sixth. In the fourth, Logan Parsley singled and scored on Tony Fagan's double to the right centerfield gap.

In the sixth, Kevin Schlange singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a passed ball. Sean Costella doubled for Carson's other hit.

The Senators continued play in the tournament today at 4 p.m. against Sierra of Central California and 7 p.m. against Righetti, which beat Manogue 5-3 on Wednesday.
