More Carson City deputies will be on the streets enforcing traffic laws from Thursday through New Year's Day, an official said.

Deputy Jarrod Adams said in a press release the increase is aimed at patrolling for drunken drivers.

Overtime will be paid for by a grant administered by the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, Department of Public Safety.

"It is estimated that over the holidays, approximately 500 people will be killed by drunk drivers. It is our goal to keep the streets safe from drunk drivers, while many people commute over the holiday season," Adams said in the press release. "It has been determined that high visibility of traffic enforcement is one of the best ways to ensure compliance with driving under the influence of alcohol laws."

Any questions can be directed to Sgt. Mike Cullen at 887-2020 ext. 3171 or Adams at 887-2020 ext. 5314.
