Carson swimmers sweep Galena

The Carson High boys and girls swim teams picked up impressive wins over Galena on Saturday at the the Northwest complex in Reno.

Carson's boys beat Galena 160-139 while the girls defeated the Grizzlies 166-146. For Carson's boys, Matt Grunert won three events.

Grunert led a 1-2 finish in the the 200-yard freestyle for Carson as he won in one minute, 56.93 seconds. Ian Murdock took second. Grunert also won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.84. Grunert, Garrett Clayton, Kevin Dyer and paul Chang won the 200 free relay as well in 1:40.59.

In the 200 individual medley, Clayton was able to edge Galena's Ryan Owens as Clayton won in 2:12.06 and Owens took second in 2:12.65. Keegan Ferrari was a triple winner for Galena, winning the 100 butterfly in 57.65 and 100 breaststroke in 1:04.19.

Dyer led a 1-2 finish for Carson in the 500 free as he won in 5:02.97 while Murdock took second. In addition, Carson with Sam Ballard, Clayton, Grunert and Dyer won the 400 free relay in 3:44.64.

Ferrari, Ryan Owens, Andrew Musselman and J.P. Wood won the 200 medley relay for Galena in 1:55.16. Wood also won the 100 free in in 1:02.477 while Carson's Chris Earwood took second in 1:03.28.

Carson swept the diving as Michael Aglietti won, Todd Banko took second and Adam Updegrove was third.

For Carson's girls, the Senators went 1-2 in the 200 free and 200 I.M. Julie Asire won the 200 free in 2:05.81 while Rebekah Niehoff took second in 2:06.21. Abby Niehoff won the 200 I.M. in 2:19.27 while Hilary Schlager was second.

Sarah Metcalf won the 50 free for Carson in 27.84. Galena's Kayla Mariani was able to edge Abby Niehoff in the 100 butterfly as Mariani won in 1:00.29 while Niehoff was second in 1:00.63.

Carson's Hilary Schlager edged Mariani in the 100 breaststroke as Schlager won in 1:15.51 and Mariani was second in 1:16.18. Carson's Danielle Judge was third.

Tatum Boehnke led a 1-2 finish in the 500 free as she won in 5:28.91 while teammate Barbara Perkins was second in 5:37.16.

In the most exciting race of the day, Galena's Janelle Lasko was able to edge Asire in the 100 free. Lasko won in 57.15 while Asire was second in 57.22. Carson's Lauren Metcalf took third.

Lasko was a quadruple winner for Galena as she led a 1-2 finish in the 100 back, winning in 1:06.84. Teammate Julie Pedersen was second in 1:07.31.

Lasko, Pedersen, Mariani and Lauren Vessie also won the 200 free relay in 1:47.59. Galena also won the 200 medley relay with Pedersen, Lasko, Mariani and Vessie winning in 2:00.34.

Asire, Schlager and the Niehoffs won the 400 free relay for Carson in 3:58.37. Galena's Janet Swenson won the diving while Rachel Neitzke was second and Lexy Eich was third for Carson.

DOUGLAS TEAMS FALL

The Douglas girls and boys swim teams were beaten in close meets against Spanish Springs at Minden's Carson Valley Aquatic Center. Spanish Springs won the girls meet 160-128 and the boys meet 132-101.

For the Douglas girls, Rebecca Chappell and Mandy Moore finished 1-2 in the 200 free, with Chappell winning in 2:06.83. Douglas also went 1-2 in the 200 I.M., with Katie O'Neill winning in 2:29.57 and Whitney Simpson taking second in 2:34.68.

O'Neill, Simpson and Josephina Sigala helped Douglas to the win in the 200 free relay as the Tigers finished in 1:52.43. Sigala also won the 500 free in 5:48.17.

For the boys, Marco Human was a triple winner as he won the 200 free in 2:03.34 and the 100 back in 1:04.03. Human, Blake Maxwell, Ben Weiss and Sean Vogl also won the 400 free relay in 3:59.82.

Maxwell and Vogl went 1-2 in the 100 free as Maxwello won in 59.38. Paul Von also won the 500 free for Douglas.
