A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Mercedes R. Newlin, 86, a 51-year resident of Reno, at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, in Reno. A rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at O'Brien-Rogers and Crosby Funeral Home in Reno. Viewing will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Newlin died March 30, 2006, in Reno. She was born Feb. 25, 1920, in Chicago to David Riordan and Laura Power.

Before moving Reno she lived in New Jersey.

She was a graduate of Loretto Heights College in Colorado and earned a master's degree in special education at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Mrs. Newlin was a second-grade teacher at St. Albert the Great Catholic School for 38 years. She retired in 1995.

She was a member of St. Albert the Great Catholic Church.

Mrs. Newlin was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1969.

Among her survivors are her sons David Newlin, of Carson City, and Daniel Newlin, of Reno; sister Corrine Quintana of Tahoe City and brothers John Riordan, of Reno, and William Riordan, of Carson City.

Burial will be at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery in Reno.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
