Springing into the final days of the school year

Spring break always marks the downhill slope to the school year, but much work and many activities are still coming up at Carson High School.

Preparing for next year gets started this week with ninth-grade orientation on Thursday at the high school. The counselors and Link Crew have been preparing an informative presentation to ease the transition of these students. Many clubs will also be represented so that parents and students can see all the positive activities available.

C-Unity is excited to host the first-ever Big Blue Bash on Friday in the North Foyer of the high school for the new incoming freshmen. C-Unity students are throwing the bash to honor them. There will be raffle drawings, refreshments, and a disc jockey. Students may purchase a ticket at their school or at Thursday's ninth-grade orientation. See you there!

The CHS NJROTC reports that their Naval Ball and Awards Ceremony will be May 5, at the Plaza Convention Center. Tickets are $22 each for adults and go on sale this week. Parents of NJROTC students are encouraged to attend. Opening ceremony and dinner is at 7 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony. Dancing starts at 9 p.m. Attire is semi-formal.

Nathaniel Hamer and Keith Powers, both senior CHS band members, performed at the 27th annual Governor's Arts Awards at Nightengale Hall on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno on March 22. Tim Chatwood, Bryan Akereley and David Reese performed percussion solos on March 31 at the "Fifth Annual Day of Percussion" at Nightingale Concert Hall, University of Nevada, Reno. Way to go band members, and thank you for representing Carson High School with such class!

We would like to congratulate Will Houk's history students. We reported in an earlier column that his students were raising money for Darfur refugees. In fewer than 10 days, the students were able to raise almost $700. Way to go guys! It is never a waste of time or effort when you reach out to help humankind.

Speaking of helping humankind, one of our own students, Cesar Hernandez who is a sophomore at CHS, is in grave danger of losing his life if he doesn't receive a kidney transplant. According to his mother, the hospital will not treat her son because the family does not have medical insurance, and so they must show proof of their ability to pay for the transplant.

Another opportunity to help humankind will take place April 24 at CHS in the small gym when the National Honor Society puts on the annual spring blood drive. United Blood Services will be taking your blood. To make an appointment, call Angila Golik at 283-1737. Our goal is to collect more than 200 units of blood.
