Carson swimmers beat Galena

The Carson High boys and girls swim teams turned in one of their most impressive efforts of the year in wins over Galena on Saturday. Carson won the girls meet 154-117 and the Senators won the boys contest 181-74.

For the girls, Carson swept the three relays as Barbara Perkins, Danielle Judge, Tatum Boehnke and Julie Asire won the 200-yard medley relay in 2 minutes, 5.72 seconds. Perkins, Boehnke, Beth Lewis and Asire also won the 200 free relay in 1:49.59 and Lewis, Judge, Melissa Wurster and Julia Lapham won the 400 free relay in 4:11.29. Wurster, Melanie Gingell, Lapham and Jamie Showalter were third in the 200 free relay.

Carson went 1-2 in the 200 individual medley as Boehnke won in 2:23.70 and Perkins was second. The Senators went 1-2-3 in the 50 free as Asire won in 26.60, Lewis was second and Showalter was third.

Boehnke won the 100 butterfly in 1:07.07, Asire won the 100 free in 59.18 and Perkins led a 1-2 finish in the 500 free, winning in 5:45.40. Judge was second. In addition, Judge won the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.22.

Galena's best showings came in the 200 free and the 100 backstroke where they went 1-2. Cady Auble won the 200 free in 2:08.10 while Michelle Hudson was second. Savannah Walborn won the 100 back in 1:09.96 while Danica Anderson was second.

Carson's boys also swept the three relays. Jacob Cornwell, Kevin Dyer, Garrett Clayton and Alex Updegrove won the 200 medley relay in 1:47.90, Updegrove, Matt Grunert, Clayton and John Wandel won the 200 free relay in 1:41.81 and Dyer, Grunert, Cornwell and Wandel won the 400 free in 3:39.29.

Cornwell led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 free, winning in 2:03.52. Nick Schlager was second and Luke Gentner was third.

Clayton won the 200 I.M. in 2:14.75 while Paul Chang was second. Wandel won the 50 free in 24.00, Dyer won the 100 fly in 1:00.50 while Updegrove was second, Grunert won the 100 free in 51.34 while Wandel was second in 51.51.

Dyer led a 1-2-3 finish in the 500 free, winning in 5:10.32. Cornwell was second and Albert Reed was third. Carson also went 1-2-3 in the 100 back as Grunert won in 1:04.03, Updegrove was second in 1:04.76 and Reed was third in 1:09.51. In the 100 breaststroke, Clayton won in 1:04.97 and Chang was second.

In diving, Kurt Anderson won the boys event while Lexie Eich was second, Samantha Turner was third, Chelsea Keating was fourth and Amanda Blevins was fifth.

VONSCHOTTENSTIEN WINS

Douglas High's Haley Vonschottenstien won the girls Zephyr Aqua 5 Pentathlon at the Carson Valley Swim Center.

Vonschottenstien finished with an overall time of 5:05.34 to finish ahead of second place Taryn Krische of North Valleys, who finished in 5:06.50. Vonschottenstien posted times of 59.67 in the 100 free, 1:10.60 in the 100 back, 1:19.31 in the 100 breaststroke, 1:08.43 in the 100 fly and 27.33 in the 50 free. Manogue's Samantha Ashmore, who swims for the Carson Tigersharks finished fifth.

Douglas High's Blake Maxwell finished with a time of 3:50.24 in four of five events in the boys meet. Maxwell finished the 100 free in 56.17, the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.63, the 100 fly in 1:08.64 and the 50 free iin 25.80.

Manogue's Ryan Hogan, who swims for the Carson Tigersharks, was second in the boys meet at 4:30.70.

Vonschottenstien was third in the 100 free, 100 fly and 50 free while Ashmore was third in the 100 back. Hogan was second in the 100 free, third in the 100 breaststroke, second in the 100 back and third in the 50 free.
