School year begins the big wind down

As the school year winds down to the last six weeks of classes, students at Carson High continue to be busy with all kinds of activities. The sports teams move closer to their zone and state tournaments, and seniors anxiously await not only their senior prom but also the presentation of their senior projects.

Prom will be held at the Silver Oak Country Club on Saturday, and senior projects will be presented to panels of teachers and community members on May 1 and 2. The community of Carson City has again shown their generosity by providing prom dresses, tuxes, shoes, purses, and dinners to students who otherwise may not have been able to attend the prom. Many community members have also volunteered their time to read, evaluate, and listen to senior project presentations.

Thank you to all who have volunteered and given to these very worthwhile activities.

This is the time of year when college-bound juniors start taking their college entrance exams. An SAT prep class was offered last week to help students prepare for that exam. Many students take both the SAT and the ACT.

Some universities require applicants to take two SAT subjects tests as well. It's a good idea for students to check with the colleges of their choice to see which exams are required for entrance into those institutions.

About 40 Carson High seniors attended WNCC College Day on Thursday. They toured the campus, met with professors and admissions personnel, and were treated to a barbecue lunch.

Fifth-graders in the Carson City School District are getting ready to take on the Future Senator Olympics which will be held May 4 at Carson High School. There will be fun games, a school tour, and a free T-shirt for those participating. Sarah Piggott, C-Unity advisor, and Jen Minifie, P.E. teacher, will be running the events of the day along with C-Unity members and P.E. students.

National Honor Society Students would really like to encourage the community to stop by the high school on Tuesday for the annual spring blood drive. The students are trying to break a record of over 200 donors in one day. Walk-in donors are welcome, but appointments can be made by calling Angila Golik at 283-1737.

Video production students under the direction of Brian Reedy competed in the annual national convention for Student Television Network in March. The team of Tyler Bourns, Greg Saunders, Maggie Jesse and Tiffany O'Day placed in the top 10 in the nation in the music video category. There were 72 entries. Other students competed in the categories of Public Service Announcement and Video Essay.

Other news around the school: The All-State Choir Festival was held in Las Vegas on April 19 and 20. Eighth grade orientation was held at the high school Thursday evening, and an eighth-grade Welcome Dance hosted by C-Unity on Friday evening.

Mrs. Hixenbaugh took a group of students to the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Friday, and Key Club members attended the annual Key Club Convention in Long Beach, California on Friday through Sunday.
