An out-of-state company has been sending letters to Carson City property owners trying to get them to pay $69.50 for property deeds available for about $5 at the Carson City Recorder's Office.

The office reported four complaints Monday regarding the Washington, D.C.-based company National Deed Service Inc., which offers to send owners a certified property deed for a fee. A document like this costs on average between $4 and $7, the recorder's office said.

An answering message at the company's office says it got the information for the people it sent letters to from a mailing list it bought.

In the letter, the company says it is not affiliated with any government body and acknowledges "MANY GOVERNMENT RECORDS ARE AVAILABLE FREE OR AT A NOMINAL COST FROM GOVERNMENT AGENCIES."

This year, there have also been reports of the company soliciting property owners across the country in states such as Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Indiana and Tennessee.
