Sheriff's new digs almost done

As the finishing touches are being put on the new Sheriff's Administrative Building at the corner of Musser and Harbin streets, Sheriff Kenny Furlong is gearing up to move in by Sept. 21.

The two-story, 44,000-square-foot building is a step-up from the department's current 18,450-square-foot building built in 1966.

"We cannot wait to get in there," Furlong said.

Currently, the patrol and records division are out on Butti Way, while the civil, detective and administrative divisions are at the old building.

Furlong said once the old building is empty, demolition will begin to make room for a parking lot. Until both public lots on the east and west sides of the new building and the fenced department lot at the rear, are complete, the patrol and records division will remain on Butti Way. Because of concerns about asbestos, demolition of the old building will take longer. It may be after Christmas before everyone is in their new home, Furlong said.

Jonathan Young, construction manager for Carson City, said the project is within its $9.33 million budget and on schedule.

Some of the features of the new building include a community room that will be used for classes or community meetings, a bay for examination of vehicles in investigations, private reporting rooms for victims of crime, and for the deputies - locker rooms and a gym.

The coroner's office, which currently works out of the jail, will also be in the new building. Though space is included for the dispatch center, Furlong said the money isn't available to move the center to the new building.

He said the heroes during all of the construction have to be those people who live nearby.

"Thank you to the neighborhood who has put up with us for the last year," he said.
